Oh Happy Day!

“Happy Birthday Haley”

It’s a glorious day!

Could you say no to this face?

I can’t…and rarely do.

So when she asked me so sweetly one day;
“Grandma, can you make a skirt for me?”
Of course I said yes.

and when she brought me this dress and said;

“out of this?”

I said…Yes!

Tossing it into my suitcase it came home with me.

and went on top of the “sewing pile”

where it called out to me every time I passed it.

“hello…remember the promise you made to Haley?”

“what are you waiting for?”

Haley is so cute

she has such great confidence in my sewing ability…

it’s good she does, because I don’t.

so I procrastinate…

With her birthday approaching, I knew this was the time.

I would do this.

I could do this.

I will do this.

Where to begin…

I’ll buy some jeans at the resale shop and somehow re-purpose them.

My plan…

remove the top part of the dress, leaving the tiers of fabric

cut the legs off of the jeans

attach and done!

Easy enough right?

Not having a clue as to what I’m doing…

I grab my scissors and hack away at the jeans

why I’m freaking out over a $5 pair of jeans, I don’t know.

I toss the top of the jeans in the wash, then dry to get some fray.

and then I set about removing the top of the dress.

Should be easy enough…just remove stitches.

my plan was working, by removing stitches and not just cutting the dress; I save the gathering.

so while removing stitches is not my favorite thing to do…

this time it was best because the layered part of the dress has a lining and all of that stayed in tact.

Jeans washed and dried, clip off strings and pin jeans to skirt.
In my mind I knew how I wanted the end result to look…

wanting the fray to show, I pinned the dress part up under the denim.

sticking myself multiply times; I’m reminded of how much I don’t enjoy sewing.

Add to that…I really don’t know what the heck I’m doing.

POCKETS!!!!  didn’t plan for those and they were in my way.

mumbling something about NASA should be thankful I’m not on their team, I begin to rethink my plan.

okay, no biggie.  I’ll just snip the pocket material away from seam and deal with them later.  🙂

Oh Happy Day!  I didn’t mess it up!

Back to the pockets.

rather than repair them so nothing would fall out of them

I thought it easier to just stitch the pockets closed; that way they don’t bunch up and need to be tucked in all the time.

Sorry Haley…no pockets.

But look!

Grandma did it!

Here’s the front…

Here’s the back!
and here’s your birthday gift from me.

I’ll have it in the mail tomorrow.

When you get it, try it one and take a picture for me.

Hope you love it and thank you for asking me to do this…

because one thing is true;

We only grow when we are stretched!

xoxo

  1. Absolutely, positively, one of the CUTEST skirts EVER!!! Well done Cindy, and I am certain that Haley will LOVE this!

This could easily become a new fashion trend!

  2. What a great idea! I love the end result…I’m sure she’ll love it.

Is today her bday? My DD’s bday is today…so I was curious. =)

    Happy Birthday Hailey! =)

  3. That is really cool. I actually love to sew, I just hate finding thread, and elastic and all that mess that’s included with it. I think you outdid your expectations of yourself especially, it looks really good!

  4. Hi! Thank you for your comments on my blog. Yes, that sweet little cookie jar is a pass down from my family…my husband’s family actually. It was in his grandparents old farmhouse in western Oklahoma…tucked away in the attic. It was covered in dark dust when they found it. They washed it up and gave it to me for Christmas one year (they knew it was precious) and I am so glad they did! I have had that little puss in boots sitting on my counter for MANY years now and she makes me smile often.
